Which subsidies does NWO offer?

NWO promotes scientific research at Dutch universities and institutes through nearly 120 different research programmes and grants.

Researchers can apply for subsidies within research programmes as defined by NWO or as apart of an Free Competition (research object is put forward by the researcher). Personal grants (like the well-known Vernieuwingsimpuls) stimulate individual researchers. Other subsidies facilitate (international) cooperation, finance the use of large-scale facilities and enable investments or publications.

Programmes and projects

Subsidies for research within specific programmatic or thematic restrictions specified by NWO. In practice researchers can apply for FTEs on a project basis (PhD students, research trainee assistants, postdocs) and supplementary budget for material costs. In case you don't find a suitable programme try submitting a research proposal of your own choice within the so-called Open Competition.

Individual

Subsidies for stimulating researchers in different stages of their scientific career. Most prominent is the Innovational Research Incentives Scheme (in Dutch: Vernieuwingsimpuls) subdivided in Veni, Vidi, Vici.

Cooperation and exchange

Subsidies for support of (international) contacts and exchange.

Investments
Large-scale facilities

Subsidies for the acquisition of apparatus and investments in infrastructure.

Subsidies for the use of large-scale facilities (also abroad), like measuring
equipment, super computers and research vessels.
